Barely has the chat died down from MLA 2024 but already the plans for next year are hurtling down the road. The Samuel Beckett Society has issued a call for papers for three proposed panels at next year’s conference which will be held in January 2025 in New Orleans. The proposed panels are as follows:

Title: Samuel Beckett and Persistent Impoverishment

We welcome 250-word abstracts on the topic of poverty relating to Beckett’s writing: the condition of his unhoused protagonists, the impoverishment of meaning in his texts; the performance of his plays in precarious circumstances, etc.

Title: Samuel Beckett and the Arresting Image

How does visibility inform the aesthetics and politics of Beckett’s writing? We welcome 250-word abstracts on the role of visual culture in his writing; the implication of power with visibility, inspection, surveillance, and the gaze.

Title: Beckett, Justice, and Social Action

How can Beckett’s writing be understood in relation to the pursuit of justice and the practice of social action? We welcome 250-word abstracts opening new lines of inquiry into the social impact of his work.

The submission deadline for all three panels is Monday, 18 March 2024. Abstracts should be forwarded to this address.
